Christmas 2012

This year we kept it low key for Christmas and spent a few days at Gigi and Papa's house in Concord and spent the rest of the time at home.  Lilly loves the attention and toys at Gigi and Papa's house and can always find someone to play with her or pick her up and give her the Tour de Christmas.

Bringing The Outdoors In

It is no secret, I dislike Winter.  I remember wishing that there would be too much snow or it would be too cold and we would have indoor recess in school.  I volunteered to work in the library putting away books and reading to the Kindergarten classes all to get out of going out for Winter recess.  I have never loved Winter sports and I dread leaving my nice warm house on cold snowy days.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow!

Lillian had her first hair trim this past weekend. I thought it was going to be one of those emotional moments, where my baby turned into a toddler.  But reality is, Lilly doesn't have a ton of hair, so the 1/4 of an inch that was trimmed is barely noticeable.  It does make her "almost" mullet look a little more full and a little less hillbilly like.

Halloween 2012

Lillian Grace Loves Halloween. She didn't go house to house this year, because it was cold and raining. But she was very happy to Trick-Or-Treat at home. She was very good about saying "Treat, Please" And she even shared the bounty of her efforts with Kitty. You can tell both of our fish have a sweet tooth.

Rain, Rain Go Away!

This past weekend was full of rain!!  I really mean that, it started raining late Friday night and did not stop until Monday morning.  Because of the dreary weather, we spent many hours indoors, snuggled up and having fun.  The rain was really a blessing in disguise, as it gave us a reason to slow down and relax.

Animals .. Art ... Then Sleep

Lilly had a very exciting weekend.  While Matt and I shopped for a new car, worked on the house and attended meetings for work.  Lilly was off visiting the animals and seeing Art Prize.  I have to say, this time around it seems like she got the best deal.

Dance, dance, just, j-j-just dance

We had a very eventful week that started when our water heater exploded on Wednesday night.  The immediate drama of getting everything cleaned up and off the floor of the basement was followed by several long days of replacing it.  We had purchased a fabulous tank-less water heater over a year ago, but had not yet installed it.  So Matt holed himself in the basement for several days, rerouting copper pipe, exhausting vents and making the whole system better.  It wasn't a very fun few days, but when it was all installed we got to get out as a family and visit the Sparta Harvest Fest.

Going To The Lodge ...

Over Labor Day weekend we took a quick family vacation to Traverse City.  We had hoped that we would be able to carve out a full week of vacation, resting and relaxing on the ocean somewhere, but this summer…time just didn’t permit it.  Hopefully, next summer it will.

The Big ...Pool

The past Saturday was HOT, so at the spur of the moment we packed up the car and headed to the beach.  Being close to Lake Michigan is one of my favorite things about living in Grand Rapids.  And from May through September we have a packed beach bag in the car, just in case.  Knowing that the forecast was perfect for the beach on Saturday, we were prepared to park far away and sit way back from the water, but we were pleasantly surprised when we got to the beach a little before 10 and there were still plenty of parking spots and our pick of locations right on the water.

A Day At The Zoo

It was an absolutely perfect weekend to visit John Ball Park Zoo.  The weather was nice and cool and surprisingly, although the parking lot seemed packed, there was plenty of room to enjoy all the animals.

My Fair Lady

On paper this was the perfect year to take Lillian Grace to the fair ... she knows all the fair animal sounds, she loves to watch people, she has an attention span for the small fairgrounds and she loves crunchy foods... what we didn't account for was the hardest rain we have had since April.  But we braved the rain, put up our umbrellas, threw on hats and navigated strategically from barn to barn ... and it ended up being a fun day.

Fourth Of July

Celebrating Fourth Of July on a Wednesday is so strange.  We didn't go out of town to my parents or head to Minnesota, instead we just spent the day bumming around the greater Grand Rapids area.  It was a fun change, but it seemed less celebratory than usual.

Father's Day

Although, last year was Matt's FIRST Father's Day, this year seemed more meaningful as Lilly was able to help prepare for it.

Just Another Happy Summer Weekend ...

Summer is my most favorite time of year, I love not having to work, I love not having to wake up early, I love the sunshine, I love the fresh, warm air, I love sun-dresses, I love E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G Summer. I have especially loved our weekends this Summer, they have been fun, adventurous, productive and low-key. This weekend was no different, a picture perfect summer weekend ....

Lillian Grace: 13 Months Old

  Thirteen Months

On the night you were born, the moon smiled with such wonder that the stars peeked in to see you, and the night wind whispered, “Life will never be the same.”  Because there had never been anyone like you…ever in the world.

Girl, You Should Be In The Movies

Having a birthday party in April is so dependent on the weather. We were hoping we would have the opportunity to have her picnic outside, but in preparation for cold or rainy weather, I put together this little montage to have playing on the TV in the background as a conversation starter and passive entertainment.

Lillian Grace: 12 Months Old

This is our last update for the first whole year of Lillian’s life.  I cannot believe it, I really can’t.  I am surprised at how emotional it is to think that a whole year has gone by and how much has changed.  Matt and I were at Home Depot the other day and there was a tiny newborn in its mother arms.  Part of me really misses those days of many naps and endless snuggles, but part of me, wouldn’t trade all the fun of a one year old for that.

This month has been a ton of almost One-Year-Old fun!  April is the month of birthdays in our family so we celebrated a lot, which meant that Lilly got a lot of time with family and friends at restaurants.  She has always been such a good baby out in public and now that she loves to eat big people food, she is very content to sit in her chair and eat and talk with us.  She does have a bad habit of throwing undesirable food on the floor, but we are working on that.  For the most part, she just likes to sit and eat and she takes eating very seriously. J  And boy does she love to eat anything sweet that goes along with a birthday, yes we are the bad parents that count Banana Cream Pie as somewhat a fruit so “not so bad.”

Lilly has also really blossomed with her walking; she is fearless and almost always prefers to walk over crawling.  The exception to the rule is playing a game of tag or crawling through her tunnel into her tent.   She has tried to pick up her pace while walking, so I think it is just a matter of time before tag is a running game.  With her increased desire to walk all-the-time, we have started to make her wear soft soled shoes, up to this point we let her go barefoot and with socks most of the time.  But to protect her little feet, shoes are now a must.  It took her a few days to get used to walking in them, mostly because her feet are still very tiny and even the smallest soft soled shoes are too long.  But she has overcome the obstacle and now she is very good in her shoes.

A few days before her first birthday, Lilly really got on a kick of saying “Hi,” she says “Hi” to everyone we pass in home depot, she says ”Hi” to the cat, she says “Hi” to herself in the mirror, she says “Hi” repeatedly until you say it back.  She has also picked up the lexicon of using the word Mum-Mum to represent any and all food.  It may mean that we feed her too many Mum-Mums, or that we should buy stock in the company.  She asks politely and not so politely for Mum-Mums when she is hungry and when she wants something that we are eating.  And she gets so mad when we don’t let her have the desired Mum-Mum especially if it is all gone.  This is when we really see her little tantrums come out, when denied an animal cracker “Mum-Mum,” she can fall to her knees and put her head down and generate the saddest cry and crocodile tears.  Redirection works wonders and most of the time, just saying, “There’s the kitty!”, snaps her out of it.
Her one-year appointment went well and although she is still an itty-bitty thing she is still on her own curve and progressing on schedule.  She weighed in at 17 pounds and stands a shy under 28” tall.

Michael & Elisa's Wedding, Eh!

We had a wonderful weekend up in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada celebrating the wedding of Michael and Elisa Horosko.

It was such a treat to see Michael in a real wedding and not one that Katie and I put together in the basement.  And it was especially refreshing to see him in a suit and not a dress-up box ensemble, that may or may not have included a dress.  I of course have no photo evidence of him wearing his suit, but I do have some great shots of the dress-up box ensemble.  :)

The reception was decadent and we enjoyed course after course of delicious food.  Lilly was AMAZING, with dinner being so long, I was worried that she might get restless.  But she sat in her chair and clapped and danced along to the dinner music, ate lots and lots of new food items and said "Hi!" to everyone that passed by.  We stayed at the reception until 10 and even though it was several hours past her bedtime she had a great time with Drew and Blake, busting a move on the dance floor.  We even got the chance to enjoy one slow dance as a family.

A Early Birthday Trip To Middlebury

It has always been a family tradition to choose a place to eat-out for your birthday.  My favorite of all time is going to Das Dutchman Essenhaus, I am not sure how or why we started coming here as a family, but over the years it has been a place where we have had lots of good food and a fun family experience.  After eating all-you-can-eat family style deliciousness you can lazily walk through shops, play on the playground or sit on big comfy sofas and just chat.  This was Bug's first trip and she loved it.  Bring on the chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes, homemade bread and special tastes of Banana Cream Pie and Ice Cream.  She sat in her big girl chair for almost an hour eating non-stop... good gracious!

Lilly's first taste of non G-Free bread.  She LOVED it.
Happy to see Great-Namma.
Glad to have Daddy keeping Lilly warm.  It was a cool, but sunny day.
LOVE!! Again, Again.
Lilly doesn't really like when Daddy or Papa wears a hat.  She has to investigate to make sure it is really them.  She does the same thing when I wear sunglasses.
