What's In A Name...

Having to remember 160 some names every semester, I am always wondering how a name is chosen for each person.

For Erin and I we both have Gaelic first names and English Queens for middle names.  Matt's name comes directly from the Bible with his middle name a family name passed down through generations.

When we were thinking of names for Lillian, we wanted to choose something that would be timeless, that would have an easy nickname and that would have great meaning to us.  We had a very short list from the beginning and it took no time at all to choose Lillian Grace.

Lillian in Hebrew means God is my vow and in Gaelic means innocence; purity and beauty.  Matt and I felt that giving Lilly a name with such meaning would help her gown into her full life in Christ.  In fact, on her bedroom wall she has her life verse that ties into her name very well..."Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12

Choosing Grace as her middle name was an easy choice.  We strive everyday to practice living with grace.  And one of my favorite things to meditate on is, "through Christ alone, by Grace alone."  We also liked that my middle name Anne in Gaelic means grace.

And in the end our Little Lillian Grace has the ultimate honor of being named after her Great-Great Grandma Lillian Houghton. A wonderful grandma who loved to read, was kind, caring and showered her family with love. We hope Lillian loves books and people as much as her Great-Great Grandma did.
