Christmas 2016

Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because we see joy in people. It is forgetting self and finding time for others. It is discarding the meaningless and stressing the true values.

Cirque du Soleil: OVO

OVO is teeming with life. Insects work, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy in motion. Their home is filled with biodiversity, beauty, action and moments of quiet emotion. The awestruck insects are intensely curious when a mysterious egg appears, representing the enigma and cycles of their lives.

Gingerbread House PARTY

Lilly was able to invite a special guest to her room for a Gingerbread House Party.  Aunnie was the lucky guest that got to deal with gold dragees, potentially non-pasteurized royal icing and 17 loud Kinders.  Lilly was very excited to Aunnie all to herself that day.  I think some times Lilly really misses all the time she spent with Aunnie before Emma was born, they will have a special connection forever.

Need a little Christmas now...

Haul out the holly; Put up the tree before my spirit falls again.  Fill up the stocking, I may be rushing things, but deck the halls again now.  For we need a little Christmas.  Right this very minute, Candles in the window, Carols at the spinet.  Yes, we need a little Christmas.  Right this very minute.
~ Jerry Herman's Broadway musical, Mame

Beauty and the Beast

This past weekend, Lilly and Matt went to see Beauty and the Beast at the civic theater.  It was part of our week long celebration for Matt's birthday.  I was supposed to join in the fun, but have been battling a nasty virus.  So, it was so nice that Ava could take my place.  Everyone had so much fun.

She's Got SPIRIT..

This one is really excited for the Holiday Spirit this year, Christmas music is already playing in her room, she has her tree up and decorated, her village out and in action, her train running around the tree, and the nativity in different stages of the Christmas Story.  It is hard not to let her Holiday Spirit engulf the whole house.  :)  Extra holiday joy for everyone.

Lilly Got A Chance To Meet Troy Cummings

Who would had know that this Summer when we picked up Little Red Gliding Hood from the summer reading list, that in the Fall,  Lilly would have a chance to meet the author.  And he even read that book, which she TOTALLY loved.

Fall Family Fun Day: Klackle Orchard

It was a Fall Family Fun day at the orchard, it was a beautiful day, so we didn't regret getting up early and arriving as soon as it opened.  There were so many fun activities for kids of all ages and the three hours we were there, was enough for this time, but left lots to do next year.

Husky Hike 2016

The Husky Hike is the annual fundraiser for Lilly's elementary school.  It is basically a walk-a-thon that everyone participates in.  Lilly had a great first year and it was a fun time to surprise the walkers with their own banner, have Emma and Auunie and GiGi join in the fun and surprise them at the end of the walk.

Five Senses Field Trip

For the first Kindergarten Field Trip of the year, we loaded up the busses and headed to the Farmers Market and Frog Hollow Playground for a 5 Senses Field Trip.  We had a fun scavenger hunt to complete while we were there and each kid got 4 dollars to spend on items of their choice in the market.  My group bought pumpkins, miniature squash, wooden cars, popcorn, and apples.

Fire Safety Week

It is Fire Safety Week, so Lilly and her class had an opportunity to learn lots of good information from the local fire department.

Art Prize: 2016

I am pretty lucky that I get to enjoy Art Prize every year, from my office window, from my walk to my office, from my drive through downtown.  But really, who needs fancy Art Prize, when our house is filled with Art Prizes.

There are few subject lines that scare me more, than the word Yikes.  The moment you read that first line, so many things run through your head.  But nothing could be even more frightening, then the second line saying there is lice in Kindergarten. Yes, welcome to week four, we now have lice to worry about.  Because just getting to school on time, making sure snacks are packed and not forgetting library is not enough in the first month.

Get Into The Groove

We are getting into the groove with 5 day-a-week school.  Some days are better than others and some days, I think our school system is crazy to think that 5 year-olds can do full day kindergarten 5-days in a row.  But everyday we are learning and growing.

We Made It Through The First "Almost" Full Week Of Kindergarten

We made it through the first "almost" full week of school.  I'm exhausted.  Lilly is energized.  I am thinking it should be Christmas vacation any day now, or even better Summer vacation, but that is just me.  Lilly has her bus habits down, her school folder under control, she has a new friend everyday and she even has her first library book from school.  It is a great change of pace for her.  Mrs. Wade posts a few pictures now and then, to give us a peak in the classroom, it is a fun feature to see what they are up-to.

Lillian Grace: First Day of Kindergarten

It is so hard to believe that this morning, Lilly jumped on the bus and headed to Kindergarten.  I feel like she should still be 4ish months old and taking her to her first day at Childtime.  But seeing her jump off the bus and run to me telling me how much fun she had, I was able to embrace the season of change.  I think the hardest thing for me, will be the quiet house on our usually Mommy and Lilly days.  I forgot how much time there is in a day, when it is not scheduled around a little one.

End of Summer Festivals

The last week of August is always filled with so many festivals in Grand Rapids.  This year we tried out the Hudsonville Fair and Yassou.  We had a great time at both events.

Kindergarten Open House

We can't believe that the day has come for Lilly to visit her Kindergarten Classroom.  The 3 classrooms did a wonderful job welcoming the little ones and they had a fun scavenger hunt to keep everyone excited.  Mrs. Wade will be Lilly's teacher and she has 17 kiddos in her class.  She is really excited that her classroom window looks in the Aunnie's backyard. :)

Fun at the Zoo with X-Rite

We had a great time visiting the John Ball Zoo with all of the friends and family of X-Rite.  It was such a great celebration and it is always fun to visit the zoo when the crowds are small and the animals are so close.

Keep The Cake Coming .... YUM

August has been a busy birthday month and it looks like it will continue in to September.  Lillian is thrilled, nothing makes her more exited that decorating and eating cake.  So in her words ... "Let's have a birthday party, every week."  She is already planning a cupcake surprise for her friends on her last visit to preschool.

Super Ready For Kindergarten 2016

Lilly had a great time at Kindergarten Camp the last 2 weeks.  Her teachers Ms. Emily, Ms. Robbin and Ms. Kim were awesome and taught Lilly and the other kiddos, so many great skills and safety procedures to get them ready for their big day.

Grand Rapids Gymnastics: Camp 2016

Lilly had a fun week getting some energy out at gymnastics camp.  3 hours of activity is the perfect amount to give us a nice low-key afternoon of naps and reading.  Nothing better on hot summer days.  Technically, Lilly was too young for the "official" camp activities, so her camp was an Intro to Gymnastics, which was a cute way to give the littles a chance to try lots of things out.

Quick ... Find My Scientist Gloves

You never know what projects might pop up around our house.  What started as a day to work on the siding, turned into a day to do a forensic investigation of the soffits.  Although,  I am not surprised in the least by our findings, it is always something we scratch ours heads at, when we find such oddities.

Lillian Did It... #1KB4K

It is no surprise based on the number of posts and instagrams that we visit the library often, especially in the summer.  We have always been a huge fan of reading incentives like BookIt, Summer Reading Challenges, etc.. so last year when the "1000 books before kindergarten" program was started, we signed right up.  And Lillian completed it, with a couple of months to spare. :)  One of the many highlights of this program was getting a new book bag, which she needed today, as we had two books bags full of books on hold for us!

Lake Life

We always look forward to our weekend trip to the Miller's lake house.  The girls are starting to get more independent and the adults are starting to get to relax more, a win-win for everyone.

God’s Everlasting Love

Romans 8:31-39
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or swod? 36 As it is written:
“For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”
37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

It will come as no surprised, to those that have visited our play porch, or Lilly at school.  This girls loves to build with Legos.  Weather it is the Mega Block brand Barbie or Lego Friends, Lilly has fun building houses and Vet Clinics and then making the little people interact.  This is totally a toy I can get behind, it is pretty fun to play Legos, now that they are more than just ideas and planes.  Talk about fun interior decorating. :)

When the sun is shining I can do anything..

"When the sun is shining I can do anything;
no mountain is too high, no trouble too difficult to overcome."
~Wilma Rudolph

Nothing better than a beautiful day on the porch.  This year we have been extremely lucky that it didn't get very cold, so we have played and played on the porch every Mama and Lilly day.  But, today was extra special, since Emma spent the day on the porch with us.  They are at a super fun age and they are starting to play make-believe together.  Today, it was all about going on trips, to the beach, to school, to the pet-vet.

It's Spring Fever

Easter 2016

The joyful news that He is risen does not change the contemporary world.  Still before us lie work, discipline, sacrifice.  But the fact of Easter gives us the spiritual power to do the work, accept the discipline, and make the sacrifice.  ~Henry Knox Sherrill

Not Quite Pantone Eggs

Dying Easter Eggs before ballet class seemed like a good idea, and worked well to keep the dye out of Lilly's hair.  And at 4, this was the first year, that Lilly could do most of the work on her own, and surprisingly, we have no lasting dye stains on our white counters.

Rainy Day Fun...

We have had some crazy rainy and windy nights lately .. not great for yard work or housework.  So, Matt has had some fun making a few videos of his recent "daddy & daughter" outings.

A Lion Pretending To Be A Lamb

It looked like I had brought back good weather and sunshine from Cali.  We were loving it.  Lots of outside fun, relaxation on the sun porch with the Vitamin D pouring in, then it happen... The March Lion roared and a good 8 inches of snow showed up.

Nothing Comes Close To The Golden Coast

We all went different places this week... I was in San Diego presenting at the SAP Academic Conference, Matt held down the fort in Grand Rapids, and Lilly spent the week in Concord.  So happy that we have facetime and the communications that we do, it makes the time apart easier to deal with.

Valentine's Day Ballet Fun

Lillian and Kelliana are loving their ballet class.  This week was SUPER fun, as we got to pick up Kelliana and take her to class in our car.  Lilly just loved having a backseat companion and listening to them talk on the ride there and back was so sweet.

Getting Ready For Valentine's Day

Preparation for Valentine's Day starts early when you have a little one that really wants to write everyone one of her friends name and her name on all of the cards and envelopes.  So several nights out and we are almost done.  We also had to make several batches of Shrinky Dinks, 'cause how much fun are those things!

Open Mic Night

Lillian's close friend Shandi, gave her a rocking Christmas gift.  She, like Lilly, loves to have some fun dressing up like a rock star and singing.  Tonight was Open Mic night in Lilly's bedroom.  For your listening enjoyment.  The night started with some Show tunes... but quickly turned into an average night on any chart topping station.
